How We Work

Phase 1: Buying food & Delivering

At the low season of each year we make our purchases in advance before the next year.
Normally this is in the fall or early winter time for us. We buy the food we need: beans, corn maze, vegetable oil and salt.
We will also pay for vegetables but pick up fresh ones when we are delivering. Then the food is stored until beginning of February when the school year is about to start. We have been working with the same driver and 3 laborers each year to help us pick up the food and disperse it to each school. This process takes 3-4 days with good weather. Times when there is a heavy downpour some roads are overflown with mud and become  impossible to cross, we have even had the communities we are in help us through and with the food.

Phase 2: Registering Our Kids

Once school has begun and children have registered for their new year we come to each school to re-register the previous kids and see if we are able to sign up some new pupils that are in need of our help. This process entails the support and co-operation of the teachers or principals organizing the students but grades to allow us to go through of previous years list. Once we sign up or re-sign a child to The Giving Bowl we take their full name, grade and picture to keep on file. At each school we go to we have a select number of children we know we can take in to cover the food cost. Within that amount we have a selected a few students that we also help pay for school needs such as books, uniforms etc to ensure their chance to an education.

Phase 3: Securing Jobs

Since we are a small team we are very happy to see that our admin costs are very low! With that being said we are also equally proud to be able to give the small communities we work in some job opportunities. We work with the same wholesalers year after year knowing that building a relationship with them we also guarantee them an income coming in and in return we know the rates we are given are fair market wholesale prices. Our driver and laborers are a team that again we have been able to work with over the years, they are proud to be able to do work for something that does good to the children of the communities they are from. At each of our schools we feed students in we also hire two cooks from that village. They come in each school day to prepare fresh hot meals for the students come lunch time and afterwards they clean up their areas to have everything ready for the next day. Some of the cooks we have, have their children in our programs and because of their jobs have told us that they are able to send their kids to school!

 

Phase 4: Special Cases

We also have been focused on recognizing when a child needs more than what the program normally provides; we will follow up to see how we can help where they fully benefit from our assistance. Our ground member Dorothy will keep a close eye on these children, starting by asking them about their home lives, how often they eat, if they have any medical issues or if they are able to go to school. Then Dorothy goes to their homes to meet the family or in most cases who they are staying with if they don't have their parents anymore. Once we see the state they live in we look at what it is they would need help with to support them to be able to further themselves long term. The children we have helped this way in the past have excelled in school, have had more hope for themselves and their future and in some cases we have saved them from something that can be medically cured but also life threatening if not treated.
